It’s been a long morning, but Jolene the Sunbird now has four new tires.

Turns out, someone installed locking lug nuts on the car at some point. And, I don’t have the key... nor is the key anywhere to be found in the car. Thankfully, my favorite tire shop was able to remove the stubborn lug nuts, install new tires, and put normal lug nuts back on.

Who puts locking lug nuts on a 29-year-old J -Body with 14-inch wheels? Not to mention one that lives in rural western Kentucky.

Oh well. All’s well that ends well, I guess. My wallet is substantially lighter, but at least the car will likely not need new tires again for many, many years.

All the rad-wood hipsters are stealing those 90's wheels.

I think any mechanic will tell you that this situation is far too common, haha.

When I take my Honda to my tire guys I always always always forget to tell them where the wheel lock key is. And then I forget where it is. Cue 10 minutes of searching in the trunk for the right cubby, but I’m always so embarrassed. It feels so stupid.

Lol I bought a new 90 Sunbird with those wheels.

Pretty sure I had wheel locks on it - those wheels were very popular and Pontiac was putting them on everything at the time.

Are these the factory GM ones where you screw a plastic nut cover over it? I remember my family’s old Ciera had those, and there was a factory key for it.

I'm always impressed with your pictures of Jolene.  Not my taste, but I respect yours.

Someone got into my old office building and stole all the kick plates, mail slots, and door stops. People be crazy.

I know this is an extremely clean example, however, I still feel these have aged very well design wise.

The bronco has one lock ing lug on each wheel, which I suppose is fair seeing as the aftermarket AR wheels are desirable to some. But the rear mounted spare is held on by 3 different locking nuts. As in, 3 that are different from each other. One of them matches the nu t on the other 4 which I was able to locate they key for. The other 2 will be an adventure when the time comes.

I have locking lugs on all my vehicles except the new van.......Likely the old lug nuts were losing their shells, so off to the parts store, parts stores stock the locking lugs and they’re cheaper than OEM in most cases, plus they’re not a chrome cover over the lug nut to break off in your socket!

Rule number 1 of locking lugs:

The customer never knows their car even HAS locking lugs, nor do they know the location of the key.
